On Oct. 7, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners honored a Brandon fourth-grader. She attends Limona Elementary School. She won the Anti-Bullying Emerging Leader Award.
The county gives these awards each year to young people up to age 19. The awards highlight their work to stop bullies.
The Brandon student created an activity for the Smart Girls program. The program helps girls overcome barriers to friendship. She also made child-friendly activities against bullies.
She worked with the art instructor at the Carey Family Boys & Girls Club. Together, they developed an art show. The show will teach others about bullies and how to stop them. She hopes to become a police officer one day.
The Board also honored an 18-year-old senior at Plant High School. She won the Individual Anti-Bullying Recognition Award. As a junior, she founded "Big & Little Panther." The program builds leadership and works against bullies at her school.
The program formed partnerships with the theater, orchestra, chorus and STEM departments. It also partnered with athletic clubs. She plans to partner with NoSolo, a national nonprofit focused on mental health awareness.
At the same meeting, the Board declared Oct. 4 to Oct. 10 as Fire Prevention Week.
