On Oct. 8, Hillsborough County Mosquito Management asked businesses to check their properties for still water. The county made the request as a dengue outbreak continued in the county.
The county said alleys, delivery docks, dumpsters and outdoor storage areas can collect rainwater. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in this water. The county said these areas are easy to miss because customers seldom use them.
The county listed items that can hold water behind a business:
Grease containers and other food-service equipment
Tarps, plastic covers and unused construction materials
Clogged drains, gutters and downspouts
Outdoor planters
The mosquito that mainly spreads dengue is Aedes aegypti. It lays eggs in small amounts of water near homes and businesses.
The county asked businesses to dump, drain or remove water. Officials said items that must stay outside need a cover. Businesses can also place these items so they cannot collect rainwater. The county also asked for regular checks, especially after rain.
Residents can report mosquito problems on the county's mosquito operations hub.
