Hillsborough County Mosquito Management Services sprayed parts of Seffner and Brandon by air on Oct. 13. The treatment ran from 7:30 PM Oct. 13 to 6 AM Oct. 14. Partners from the Manatee County Mosquito Control District helped with the work.
The Seffner/Brandon zone had these limits:
North: Pruitt Road
South: Bloomingdale Avenue
East: McIntosh Road / Valrico Road
West: I-75
Crews also treated South Tampa and Davis Islands/Harbour Island. Helicopters flew at 150 feet. They applied Dibrom insecticide at .66 ounces per acre. The county listed Oct. 14 and Oct. 15 as alternate spray dates.
The county increased air and ground treatments for one reason. Mosquito traps in many neighborhoods show dengue fever virus activity. The county works with the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County on this effort.
The county asks residents to follow the 3 Ds:
Dress in light-colored, long-sleeved clothing with closed-toed shoes.
Defend with an insect repellent that has DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
Dump or cover standing water.
Old tires can breed mosquitoes. Hillsborough Solid Waste customers can drop off up to 12 tires a year at no cost. They can use any of the county's five Solid Waste collection sites.
Residents can sign up for alerts about aerial treatments in their neighborhood. The county also keeps an online map of treatment areas.
