Hillsborough County Mosquito Management Services scheduled an aerial treatment over Bloomingdale from 7:30 PM Oct. 15 to 6 AM Oct. 16.

Crews planned to apply Dibrom insecticide to control adult mosquitoes. A helicopter flew the mission at an altitude of 150 feet. The application rate was .66 ounces per acre.

The Bloomingdale zone had these limits:

  • North: Bloomingdale Avenue
  • South: Rhodine Road/Boyette Road
  • West: I-75
  • East: Lithia Pinecrest Road/Boyette Road

The county also listed Seminole Heights and East Tampa for the same night. The alternate spray dates were Oct. 16 and Oct. 17.

The county increased air and ground treatments for a reason. Its mosquito traps in many neighborhoods showed dengue fever virus activity. The county works with the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County on surveillance, education and treatment.

The county asks residents to follow the 3 Ds:

  • Dress in light-colored, long-sleeved clothing with closed-toed shoes.
  • Defend with an insect repellent that has DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Dump or cover standing water.

Discarded tires can breed mosquitoes. Hillsborough Solid Waste customers can drop off up to 12 tires a year at no cost. They can use any of the county's five Solid Waste collection sites.

Residents can sign up for alerts about aerial treatments in their neighborhood. The county also keeps an online map of treatment areas.
